Check out the exciting line up for this year’s Range Beef Cow Symposium in Mitchell, NE November 18-20. On Monday afternoon the program will kick off with beef quality assurance training and certification and you won’t want to miss the Ron Gill Stockmanship Clinic. Tuesday morning will begin the traditional program with Drs. John Hall and Benton Glaze from University of Idaho talking about when it pays to artificially inseminate and breed complementarity.  Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam from UC-Davis will talk about alternative meats. Other traditional talks will include a market update by the legendary Jim Robb, as well as talks on leasing cows, hedging the markets for the cow/calf producer, grazing dynamics, calf health, and generational transfer including a presentation by the R.A. Brown Ranch of Throckmorton, Texas.  Producer presentations are always very useful to producers. Vern Terrell from Hay Springs, NE titled his talk, “Ways to Dare to be Different”. Vern will share things that have worked for his operation. A producer panel addressing added value will include Amanda and Britton Blair of South Dakota and Gary Darnall of Harrisburg, NE.

Both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon sessions will include demonstrations on how to take, preserve and ship biological samples for pregnancy, DNA, and disease testing, how to correct a mal-presentation in calving difficulty, and how embryo transfer works and what makes a good recipient cow. Additionally, participants will get to match a set of bulls with their expected progeny differences, match hay bales to their nutrient analysis, and compare fecal samples to diet samples.

An additional demonstration in the area will be Juan Reyes using stock dogs to move cattle. One of Juan’s dogs won the inaugural National Cowdog Hall of Fame Award.

Tuesday and Wednesday night bullpen sessions will be held at the Gering Civic Center in Gering, NE so producers can discuss the day’s topics and meet with other producers who may have similar experiences.
