STILLWATER, Okla. – Do you have an interest in growing fruit trees in your landscape? Do you already have a few trees, but you would like more information to enhance your production efforts? If so, mark your calendar for Feb. 15 and attend the Backyard Fruit Tree Workshop hosted by Oklahoma State University’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.
This informative workshop will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cimarron Valley Research Station, 10820 S. Jardot, near Perkins, Oklahoma.
Becky Carroll, OSU Extension associate specialist, fruit and pecans, said the workshop will cover a variety of topics related to growing fruit trees.
“We’ll cover everything from fruit tree selection, planting and pruning, to fertilizing and weed control,” Carroll said. “Other topics on the agenda include protecting trees from wildlife and pest management. Attendees can get hands-on experience by planting and pruning fruit trees during the workshop.”
The workshop is free to attend, but participants must register by Feb. 12 by contacting Stephanie Larimer at 405-744-5404 or via email at stephanie.larimer@okstate.edu. Keep in mind this is an outdoor workshop and dress for the weather conditions.
Carroll said fruit trees can make a great addition to any landscape. Choosing fruits adapted to your location and soil type can make the difference in being successful.
“Homegrown fruits are known to promote well-being. Food security and nutrition are essential concerns to every household and growing your own fruit gives you more control over what is in your food and where it comes from,” she said. “In
addition, you reap the benefit of incredible flavors and the freshest fruit possible. Another advantage includes the trees provide shade for your yard and home. There are many benefits of growing fruit trees besides the fruit itself.”
In the event of inclement weather, the workshop will take place Feb. 22.
